There’s not a whole lot you can say about this.  Quincy is the man. Pretty cool that Loggins and McDonald are kicking it too.

    ‘Nightcall’ by Kavinsky (2010)

This song makes me feel funny.  I first heard of this guy when he had a song in Grand Theft Auto.  In this song he teams up with Lovefoxxx from CSS to produce what sounds like a psycho sex pervert talking to his innocent girlfriend on the phone while he’s driving through the desert at about 500 mph.  One of my favorite things about this track is that the girl calls him “boy” even though the voice responding is CLEARLY a sex-demon.  It paints this weird beauty and the beast image in my head and gives it a vibe I have never taken from a song before.  It also doesn’t hurt that it was produced by Guy-Manuel de Homme-Christo of Daft Punk and mixed by SebastiAN.

    ‘Terry’ by Anika (2010)

Anika wrote and produced her debut self titled album with Portishead’s Geoff Barrow.  ”Terry”, originally penned by british 60’s girl pop singer/songwriter ‘Twinkle’ is one of several covers on the record.  The original version of ‘Terry’ fell under heavy scrutiny for baring too much similarity to Shangri-Las ‘Leader of the Pack’.  Both being songs of teen tragedy - a girl lamenting the death of her daredevil boyfriend.  Despite having big name musicians attached to the original song (Jimmy Page played guitar on it) it was banned from the BBC.  I don’t know much about Anika other than I love her cover and how slow her version is. Enjoy.

‘A Song From Under The Floorboards’ by Magazine (1980)

Magazine was the result of Howard Devoto’s decision that the Buzzcocks punk rock canvas was too limiting a medium for what he wanted to do musically.  One part pop-weirdo and one part lovesick linguist, some consider him Brian Eno and Bryan Ferry in one body.  I love the self deprecation going on in this song.  ”By force of habit, I am an insect…”  It doesn’t get much better than that. This song rips.

‘Something in 4/4 Time’ by Daryl Hall & Robert Fripp (1977)

Recorded in 1977, Sacred Songs was produced and co-written by Robert Fripp.  The album was not released though, until 1980 after being deemed “not commercial enough” by RCA. Their main criticism being that it lacked a single.  ”Sacred Songs” also served as part two of what Fripp wanted to be considered a trilogy with Peter Gabriel’s second album being the first and Fripp’s own “Exposure” serving as the third.  Sacred Songs is also notable as being one of the first albums to feature Fripp’s signature tape loop system ”Frippertronics.”
